Being parents of 7 and 2 thirds children and users of disposable nappies for 10 years we thought we would have a go with the Close Pop in nappies. Having had trials with various other cloth nappies including onelife, bambino mio, lollipop and bum genius and not getting on with them we came across the Close pop in Nappy.
We bought two 10 packs from www.devonpramcentre.co.uk for our 2 boys, Ben who was 3 and Thomas who was 10 months. We have now been using them for over 18 months and have been really impressed.
We found the close pop in nappies almost as easy to use as the disposables, the Velcro closure system is almost identical to that of a disposable nappy and there are no fiddly folds or poppers that hubby could use as an excuse to avoid the dreaded changes!! The Close Pop in Nappy is also a single piece nappy once assembled so there is not the whole inner and outer issue.
Another huge advantage of the Close Pop in Nappy is that every one of the nappies in the 10 pack is suitable from birth to potty where a lot of the other systems out there use outer waterproof liners over the nappy and there are only a small number in each size supplied with the packs so you end up either having to wash nappies every day or having to buy extra outers. With the Close Pop in Nappy we are only having to wash every 2 to 3 days.
Washing and drying is also a relatively uncomplicated task, we simply drop the biodegradable liners in a bag ready for the bin, (you can flush them away in the toilet if your drains are suitable) then separate the booster from the outer and bung them all in the machine, first on a pre soak and then on a 40 degree wash. Drying is fairly painless, the outers drape over our banisters and air dry overnight, the boosters and night time boosters dry in a day on the line or 100 minutes in the tumble dryer. You can also dry them on radiators overnight.
Getting the Close nappies ready for use is really easy, 2 poppers at the front adjust the size for your child, the boosters simply popper in at the top and the bottom, we let our 7 year old pick up pocket money for the job!! It really is that easy to do!!
Best of all there are no leaks!!! Having tried so many different real or reusable nappies this was the single reason we used disposables for so long. It isn’t fun when a nappy leaks because of all the extra washing it creates, Extra clothing, extra sheets etcetera. Close put it down to the double gusset around the leg which is very similar to the design used in disposable nappies, it works very well fitting small skinny baby legs as well as chunky toddler legs. The Close Pop In nappy also has a clever flap at the top and the bottom of the outer which also helps to prevent boosters sliding out of place when toddlers wriggle, particularly at night in their sleep. Suffice to say the Close Pop In nappy performs as well as a disposable nappy in terms of leak prevention.
Another huge advantage of the Close Pop In nappy is the reduction in nappy rash.
We used to use pots and pots of sudocream to soothe and clear this up because of the use of disposable nappies. The natural fibres and the way the mess is absorbed by the Close Pop in nappy has virtually eradicated the problem and we have barely used 1 pot of the sudocream in a year!! A big tick against the comfort for little ones box there.
The Close Pop in also did not work out to be that much bigger than a disposable nappy, because the design is more compact than many others we had tried out we had no difficulties getting clothing over the nappies.
If you are in an area where you can only put out a limited quantity of landfill waste like we are in East Devon you’ll instantly reduce rubbish as well, we saved over a bin bag a week the moment we started using the Close Pop In nappies a blessing since we only get a collection once a fortnight!!
The Close Pop In cloth nappy also worked out to be one of the cheaper solutions on the market, at the time we bought ours from www.devonpramcentre.co.uk they were £100 per pack which worked out at £200 for 20 birth to potty nappies. Other systems were working out at anything from £250 to £300 for the same number. Against disposables we were spending around £35 per month on disposable nappies so the Close Pop ins paid for themselves in around 6 months. With another one on the way we are definitely quids in!!!
Durability. The Close Pop In Nappies after 18 months are still in very good shape, as with any fabric there is a little bobbling to the outers but this has not had any effect on the performance. I was a little bit dubious at first because of the Velcro fastenings but my apprehension was proved wrong, the Velcro has not degraded at all, the clever little tabs you use to protect the Velcro whilst in the wash is a brilliant touch and one I have only seen on the close pop in nappies.
We have been very impressed with the Close Pop In nappy and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone considering using re-usable, cloth or terry nappies.
